Chiral symmetry breaking and violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in underdoped cuprates

چکیده
We propose that the recently observed violation of theWiedemannFranz law in the normal state of underdoped cuprates is caused by spin-charge separation and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional system consisting of massless Dirac fermions, charged bosons and a gauge field. While the d-wave spinon gap vanishes at the Fermi points, the nodal fermions acquire a finite mass due to strong gauge fluctuations. This mass provides a gap below which no free fermions can be excited. This implies that there is not a residual linear term for the thermal conductivity, in good agreement with experiments. Other physical implications of the CSB are also discussed.

Chiral symmetry breaking and violation of Wiedemann-Franz law in underdoped cuprates
We propose that the recently observed violation of theWiedemannFranz law in the normal state of underdoped cuprates is caused by spin-charge separation and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, within a (2+1)-dimensional effective model with massless Dirac fermions, bosons and a U(1) gauge field. While the spinon gap vanishes at the Fermi points, at low temperatures no mobile fermionic excitation...
متن کاملDetection and implications of a time-reversal breaking state in underdoped cuprates.
We present general symmetry considerations on how a time-reversal breaking state may be detected by angle-resolved photoemission using circularly polarized photons as has been proposed earlier. Results of recent experiments utilizing the proposal in underdoped cuprates are analyzed and found to be consistent in their symmetry and magnitude with a theory of the copper oxides. These experiments i...
متن کاملFermi liquid behavior of the in-plane resistivity in the pseudogap state of YBa2Cu4O8.
Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that, inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447(7144):565-568], optical conductivity [Mi...
متن کاملTheory of spin excitations in undoped and underdoped cuprates
We consider the magnetic properties of high Tc cuprates from a gauge theory point of view, with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Underdoped cuprates possess certain antiferromagnetic correlations, as evidenced, for example, by different temperature dependence of the Cu and O site NMR relaxation rates, that are not captured well by slave boson mean field theories of the t-J model. We show that...
متن کاملTime-reversal symmetry breaking by a (d+id) density-wave state in underdoped cuprate superconductors.
It was proposed that the id(x(2)-y(2)) density-wave state (DDW) may be responsible for the pseudogap behavior in the underdoped cuprates. Here we show that the admixture of a small d(xy) component to the DDW state breaks the symmetry between the counterpropagating orbital currents of the DDW state and, thus, violates the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. This symmetry breaking results in a no...
